Sadies Dining Room Albuquerque
Sadie's Dining Room has been a family run New Mexican food restaurant since 1950. Very popular, huge, colorfully decorated, friendly venue packed with visitors and plenty of locals who are not in short supply either. There is a wide swath of people from different walks of life here sharing food and space together. Big inexpensive portions. It's a busy long wait for tables kind of place. We ate in the bar and found the place friendly and server helpful and attentive. The food was very good. Even the customers are friendly. When we waited for a place to open at one of bar tables, a man came over and offered to share his family's table with us. It's that kind of place.

We're frugal people. Raised by parents that went through the Depression, for whom money was tight, where pennies were saved, socks were darned and the Dads' worked 2 jobs. We finish everything on the plate unless it's disgusting - "remember there are starving kids in China". In 1950's Chicago, Danny got used to eating SOS (if you don't know - lucky you - it doesn't mean Save Our Ship). Meanwhile out in East LA, Roxanne's family occasionally ate at the local drug store lunchcounter for their big night out. Somehow we found each other in San Francisco in the 70's with flowers in our hair.
We have always lived below our means and think of frugality as a virtue. Danny turns the compact florescent lights off when leaving a room, keeps the thermostat low, cuts and burns our trees to fend off the 7 month Minnesota winter, searches for the best deals, and tries to squeeze as much mileage out of every gallon of gas. Roxanne doesn't replace things until they're about to give up the ghost and thinks it's important to be careful about money so we can give more of it to charity and people in need.
Now that we're retired and our three kids are on their own living frugal (fist pump), we've loosened up the purse strings and are traveling and eating out more. We still like to get good value for our money and to eat at places that offer good food for not too much money. Good Cheap Eats. We look for above average reasonably priced comfort food in restaurants we think are the best bet for our time, effort, money and digestion. We try to avoid big chains, but will make exceptions for noteworthy smaller regional or local ones. Ideally we try to eat at places with character and history. The kind of places that help make America the unique and diverse place it is.
These are places we've either been to or will eventually - God Willing and the Creek don't rise. So this website doubles as our black book reference diary. Little known fact about us: Danny consults his magic 8 ball when faced with a tough decision (like where to eat) and for answers to life's persistent questions. Roxanne remembers to bring the ball along.
