Duran Central Pharmacy Albuquerque

Duran Central Pharmacy is just down east of Old Town Albuquerque. Tucked away in back through the aisles of soaps, sundries, medications, post/greeting cards and personal hygiene is a nice, quiet, no frills drug store lunchcounter with some tables, a patio and a counter with stools. This was the first place we ate in ABQ. We were on a walk to Old Town from our bed and breakfast where we had been given the down low on it. Otherwise, we wouldn't have had a clue. Because of that and from the looks of who was there we would venture that it is a locals place and we gather it has been in operation for a very long time - 40s-50s? - that it is indeed frequented by a wide swath of the community who no doubt want to keep it that way - and that it is "real" Albuquerque. If I lived here I would bring my out of town guests here to give them a taste of my town's best real bare bones food. We sat at the counter to be close to the action. The people couldn't have been more welcoming and friendly. We had a good time talking with everyone. It was real food, real hot, real good and real reasonable. I was told it was authentic Northern New Mexican comfort food. The tortillas were freshly made and buttered - they were the best we've ever had - they held up well for sopping duty on the green chile stew.

We're frugal people. Raised by parents that went through the Depression, for whom money was tight, where pennies were saved, socks were darned and the Dads' worked 2 jobs. We finish everything on the plate unless it's disgusting - "remember there are starving kids in China". In 1950's Chicago, Danny got used to eating SOS (if you don't know - lucky you - it doesn't mean Save Our Ship). Meanwhile out in East LA, Roxanne's family occasionally ate at the local drug store lunchcounter for their big night out. Somehow we found each other in San Francisco in the 70's with flowers in our hair.

We have always lived below our means and think of frugality as a virtue. Danny turns the compact florescent lights off when leaving a room, keeps the thermostat low, cuts and burns our trees to fend off the 7 month Minnesota winter, searches for the best deals, and tries to squeeze as much mileage out of every gallon of gas. Roxanne doesn't replace things until they're about to give up the ghost and thinks it's important to be careful about money so we can give more of it to charity and people in need.

Now that we're retired and our three kids are on their own living frugal (fist pump), we've loosened up the purse strings and are traveling and eating out more. We still like to get good value for our money and to eat at places that offer good food for not too much money. Good Cheap Eats. We look for above average reasonably priced comfort food in restaurants we think are the best bet for our time, effort, money and digestion. We try to avoid big chains, but will make exceptions for noteworthy smaller regional or local ones. Ideally we try to eat at places with character and history. The kind of places that help make America the unique and diverse place it is.

These are places we've either been to or will eventually - God Willing and the Creek don't rise. So this website doubles as our black book reference diary. Little known fact about us: Danny consults his magic 8 ball when faced with a tough decision (like where to eat) and for answers to life's persistent questions. Roxanne remembers to bring the ball along.
